TUTORIAL - Abstract
Rebecca Guenther, chair of the PREMIS Editorial Committee, presents a tutorial about the PREMIS Data Dictionary, core metadata for digital preservation. It covers the PREMIS data model, the individual semantic units in the Data Dictionary, implementation approaches, and in particular the use of PREMIS with METS and other container formats. The tutorial includes hands-on exercises and it shows practical examples. The PREMIS Data Dictionary is based on a data model for organizing preservation metadata, provides guidance for local implementations and is becoming the standard for exchanging information packages between repositories. The Data model defines five types of entities and the relationships between them: Intellectual entities, Objects, Events, Rights, Agents. The PREMIS Working Group, which developed the PREMIS Data Dictionary, intended this instrument to be technically neutral; this flexibility allows its own application in a wide range of contexts, apart from the specific type of implementation used for managing, storing, preserving, and exchanging the PREMIS metadata. In April 2008 the PREMIS Editorial Committee issued a muchrevised version 2.0 of the PREMIS Data Dictionary.

The tutorial also addresses:

  • PREMIS development and its relationship to the OAIS Reference Model;
  • PREMIS XML schemas;
  • Introduction to container formats;
  • How PREMIS is used within METS and with other potential container formats.

Biography of Rebecca S. Guenther
Rebecca is Senior Networking and Standards Specialist in the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress. Her current responsibilities include work on national and international information standards, primarily in the area of metadata, including MARC and a number of XML metadata standards. She is chair of the PREMIS Editorial Committee and was cochair of the OCLC/RLG PREMIS Working Group, which developed the PREMIS Data Dictionary. She also serves as chair of the ISO 639 Joint Advisory Committee on language codes.

ROUND TABLE - Abstract
The round table regards PREMIS and its relationship with the OAIS model, and the other standards related to digital objects. Specifically, participants will analyze the integration level of different standards and exchange information about the current practices, international and Italian. The round table offers a unique opportunity for participants not only to improve their awareness about implementation strategies and good practices, but also to share their own experiences.

The round table expects the participation of researchers, practitioners, and representatives of National Libraries, Universities, Record Offices, and Archives in order to exchange ideas and experiences, for promoting and improving international cooperation in digital library research areas. All the participants will be able to show and introduce their own projects and evaluate issues in implementing preservation metadata and in particular issues encountered in implementing PREMIS.

The round table foresees the participation of European project representatives, like: DPE, CASPAR, PLANETS, DELOS, PRESTOSPACE and guest speakers from the PREMIS Implementors' Group; the event aims to stimulate some coordination mechanisms within the user community for sharing solutions developed in the field of digital preservation and PREMIS implementing tools.

The round table outlines some different and possible approaches in implementing PREMIS in container formats, especially in the context of the METS, MAG and MPEG-21 DID frameworks.
