Empowering users: an active role for user communities ha confermato l’interesse per i temi proposti, nonché l’attendibilità e la solida rete di collaborazioni che la Fondazione Rinascimento Digitale si è guadagnata nel settore delle nuove tecnologie applicate alla valorizzazione e conservazione dei Beni Culturali.

Abstract:
State of art of PI technologies and initiatives. Persistent identification of Internet resources is an important issue within the life cycle approach to cultural and scientific digital library applications. The instability and uncertified credibility of these identifiers reduce the extent to which the Internet can be used as a medium for research and dissemination of scientific and cultural contents. There are many systems that address these issues, but no single technology is likely to prevail at a global level.

La seconda edizione della conferenza Cultural Heritage online – Empowering users: an active role for user communities, svoltasi a Firenze il 15-16 Dicembre 2009, ha confermato l’interesse per i temi proposti, nonché l’attendibilità e la solida rete di collaborazioni che la Fondazione Rinascimento Digitale si è guadagnata nel settore delle nuove tecnologie applicate alla valorizzazione e conservazione dei Beni Culturali.
L'evento è stato un incontro fecondo di considerazioni, riflessioni, stimoli e anche un’occasione di confronto e di scambio di esperienze per numerose iniziative e progetti internazionali, che sono stati presentati da importanti istituzioni pubbliche e private, nazionali ed estere, impegnate nel settore culturale e ormai sempre più interessate ed attente al mondo dell’ICT, all’utilizzo delle tecnologie informatiche e alla fruizione delle risorse culturali in formato digitale.

Abstract:
Long term preservation is a responsibility to share with other organizations, even adopting different preservation methods and tools. The overcoming of the interoperability issues, by means of the achievement of a flawless exchange of digital assets to preserve, enables the feasibility of applying distributed digital preservation policies.
The Archives Ready To AIP Transmission, a PREMIS Based Project (ARTAT-PBP), aims to experiment with the adoption of a common preservation metadata standard as interchange language in a network of cooperating organizations that need to exchange digital resources with the mutual objective of preserving them in the long term.

Abstract:
In this paper we present an Italian initiative, involving relevant research institutions and national libraries, aimed at implementing an NBN Persistent Identifiers (PI) infrastructure based on a novel hardware/software architecture. We describe a distributed and hierarchical approach for the management of an NBN namespace and illustrate assignment policies and identifier resolution strategies based on request forwarding mechanisms. Starting from the core motivations for the assignment of “persistent identifiers” to digital objects, we draw a state of art in PI technologies, standards and initiatives, and illustrate other NBN implementations. We then describe structure and goals of our initiative and illustrate the features already implemented in our system and the results of our testing activities. Finally, we draw some conclusions and point out the future directions of our work.
